Time to go public with this blog

So I have stewed over the 1000 plus images and my notes from the 20 days and tried to pull together a cohesive blog on my trip.  This is still a work in progress but I invite my fellow travelers to participate by sending pages, or pictures or even video (short video) to fill in the gaps, if you will.

I would like to make this something friendly and funny, that might encourage people to go on the next trip to Korea. Hopefully they will be a bit more prepared for the fun and surprises in store for them.

Time for a new post

Finding Internet connections has proven to be the trickiest part of the blog. In Seoul, our hotel had wifi, but only in the lobby. Like Chicago or New York, it bustles all night long with buses, trucks and people. So much to do, so little time. 파리 파리! Bali Bali– hurry hurry!

Now we are in Jeonju- a historic city, home to the Lee dynasty. The city is modern but more like West Allis or Riverwest in character. Homes are much more modest, the city streets are not as modern, high tech and as corporate as Seoul.

The Hanok Maul 하녹 말 is a small city in a city. It is the older city with 17-late 19th century architecture. Picture a large historic district with very precise building regulations. The streets are narrow, homes are often down alleyways that look more like driveways which barely handle the little Kia’s and Hyundai’s.
But there are surprises down theses little winding lanes- like traditional Korean tea houses, artisan’s studios, and wonderful out-of-the-way restaurants and guest houses like the Floating Little Cloud that we are staying in.

Master Kim, our book and paper teacher lives down one of these maze like lanes. Open her old wooden and iron hinged gate and you get a good scolding by Chumbi, the dog. The little garden with bonsaied trees, kimchi pots and flowers is her domain- but one shush from Master Kim and she settles back under a stunted pine at the top of a little raised garden by the door. She let me scratch her ears on my way out to lunch and gave the sad tail wag like she didn’t want me to leave. Somehow I knew I would find some four footed friends here.

I have a ton of pictures- over 400 in the last 5 days. When I can get a steady strong connection, I will embellish the posts. Lots of fantastic architecture, wonderful meals and incredible sties. Probably just as well that I can’t get them up- this way I can edit a bit more before I post.

Time to turn in – more projects with Master Kim at 9 and carving stone seals in the afternoon.

Beware of POLs* Knitting Socks

20120525-195039.jpg

Just a few more hours now…  I am almost packed ( a few things line drying to be sure before I stuff them in a duffel)  Pencils, check, graph paper, check, yarn, check, needles, check and check.  But wait a minute– will they let me knit socks on the plane with double points? how about a scarf on short bamboo circulars? Crochet a hat?   Hmmm– better “check” into that….

Now I haven’t flown since before 9/11; so I suspect I will get an eye-opening experience.   I have heard all the horror stories about confiscation of nail clippers and 4 oz. bottles of hand lotion.  Seems like they need to get rational about what constitutes a “real” danger. Like the bad air quality in the plane and people with the fuses in their underoos. .~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Flying doesn’t bother me, except I have always gotten some respiratory bug everytime I have flown in the past.  Take off and landings make me jumpy;  so I like to have something zen like to settle into.  Books and iTunes don’t work.  Concentration does.  Best way to get my mind off of things is knitting complex fair isle (stranded colors like scandanavian sweaters) or complex patterns.  I have been learning to knit lace for just this reason with the hope (and fingers crossed) that I could bring a hook or needles with me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I checked out the TSA site– much to my delight, knitting needles are again allowed. Way to go for the knitters and crafters.  You can take needlework and accessories, but scissors are still an issue.  Seriously?? I would be more worried about knitting needles than some little blunt nose kiddy scissors.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TSA doesn’t list any restrictions either on hooks or needles (like they need to be of a certain  small size or made of bamboo or plastic.)  So I am going to take a chance and take my favorite metal double points and sock yarn. Now if I was a terrorist, I would beware the pudgy little old lady turning a heel on a pair of red wooly socks. They might be suprised how fast she can throw that 6 inch solid aluminum US#8 knitting needle- and there are four more where that came from.
Maybe the US Marshall’s should take up knitting. Would calm their nerves and give them extra ammunition and warm socks.

SHPILKIS- no, that’s not Korean

My friend Fran patiently listened to my plight– I am so ready to go, packed and unpacked twice already.  I did the dishes,  did the laundry,  paid the bills, checked my paperwork twice and started emptying the frig.  I just want to go sit in the airport- now!

She just said “shpilkis!”

Of course, there is a yiddish word this craziness:

{Transliteration from the original Yiddish}  To ‘bounce off the walls’, nervous energy without purpose.  In English – to be ‘on pins and needles’.
Common in kids with ADD or ADHD before they are medicated or the     so-called normals ones when they have had too much sugar,
or adults ingesting too much caffeine or any combination of same.
                          (Hmm, I don’t think I can blame the coffee this time…)
Also defined as the type of boredom that makes you want to scream and jump up and down, as opposed to the type of boredom that puts you to sleep.
How to use Shpilkis in everyday conversations–
                                                                                                                            `
  • “Oy, you kids in the back seat! Enough with the shpilkis already, or I’m gonna turn around this car around, right now!” (Aaron and Zak, I’m sure never heard this one…. right?)
  • “Check out poor Sophie, she got into the catnip.  Such shpilkis I have never seen!”
  • “By the time I had answered the 200th question  at the doctor’s office, I had such a case of shpilkis,  I wanted to scream and run all the way back to Milwaukee!”

Waiting for forever for the Trolley in the Garden District of NOLA
Shpilkis indeed!

Coffee! I need coffee!

One of the things I dread most about traveling is accommodating my caffeine addiction. Where will I get my next fix?

As a multi-tasking night person, weaning off caffeine is not ever going to be an option. Caffeine seems to keep my barometrically induced migraines at bay; and besides, I really enjoy a good iced coffee in the afternoon. I have already been warned about the brown fluid in the ubiquitous vending machines in Korea– to quote my language instructor “not good, not good” and Starbucks will be expensive. (Okay, so they are expensive here, too.)
My American Express – as my Dad calls it- my diet Coke (because I never leave home without it) maybe hard to come by over there. Sugary drinks and soju are not my cup of tea- neither are most teas (not enough caffeine jolt and too many trips to the WC.)
So I guess I will need an Internet cafe and hope the coffee is as good as the wifi or I am going to have the same issues as this guy. Caffeinated Ambrosia: Or How This Blog Runs on Coffee
